May 2023. Although Evolution Free Zone is in the earthworks stage, we already have since the beginning of the project a comprehensive sustainability plan that covers triple utility (social, environmental, economic). This plan considers actions that allow the proper operation of the Park while protecting the environment and the surrounding communities.
For this purpose, we have incorporated a tree planting plan in partnership with Tropica Tica , a company that has been providing construction and landscaping design services for 30 years, participating in the most important developments in the country, with vast experience in creating spaces in other industrial parks in Costa Rica.
A large percentage of land of the 124-hectare site in which Evolution Free Zone is located was used for sugarcane production before the construction of the Park. This plan intends to incorporate around 10 native species of the area thus promoting the benefits of a natural landscape: soil protection, insulation against heat, foliage, and encouragement of animal sighting and housing, among others.
Tropica Tica treats the species for up to three months, so that they can gain the appropriate size to move into their assigned space. The species that are being considered are savannah oak (Tabebuia rosea), Lorito (Cojoba arborea), and Sotacaballo (Zygia longifolia), among others. By planting the trees, nutritional value is provided to the soil, and a treatment of a month and a half is given so that the plant is capable to fully develop.
Although this phase of the construction process implies the incorporation of the trees, this is a continuous process. We have foreseen that with the opening of the park and the beginning of operationsstart-up of the companies, we can hope to add players, such as clients, schools, and the community, to our reforestation campaigns inside and outside our property, in springs, or in nearby protection zones, to help with the conservation of the biodiversity of the zone of influence of the Free Zone”, says Álvaro Carballo, President of CODE Development Group.
The Free Zone will have recreational spaces for employees and other areas dedicated to the conservation of species and springs found on the property.
The idea is that people have a one-on-one experience with nature,” closes Carballo.
Regarding fauna, developers are currently working with local environmental NGOs, such as one called “FUNDEMA” and and the other “Primates de Grecia” where, with the support of Evolution Free Zone, biodiversity studies are being carried out through species-mapping, using camera traps.
It is important to emphasize that these actions are only part of an initial work plan, and more will be added over time. Evolution Free Zone will be a high-tech business park , where companies will find a next-generation ecosystem in constructive practices, infrastructure, information systems, value-added complementary services, and human talent, to operate and grow in the long term, promoting the sustainable development of the country and nearby communities.
